Raku
dragon
Developed by the
Japanese, raku is a low temperature
procedure involving a very rapid glaze firing cycle. The piece is placed into, and removed from, a red-hot
kiln, then placed in a
bin or pit of combustible material, such as sawdust, allowed to burn
for a few seconds, then covered, causing a reduction atmosphere. Pots are
usually considered art pieces, with glazes ranging from matt crackle to
iridescent blues and copper colours. The Japanese symbol for raku means
"enjoyment". |
